Cooper started the big 1st grade yesterday. Well he hasn't been that excited to go to 1st grade, some days he was more excited than others. I thought that we were doing a good job at talking it up and telling him that he was going to have such a great time. But he would keep saying "I am just a little nervous." First let me tell you a few things about Coop's personality. He is super sensitive and very tender. It is very rare that we yell at Cooper because it would just make him cry, but we don't ever have to yell at him because he very rarely does anything that he shouldn't. Just reading the school and classroom rules to him made him quiver inside, I know that I will never have to deal with him being the trouble maker. So back to the story... The day before he started he went and met his teacher and had a little tour of his classroom, I could see that he was still nervous, but being very brave. I continued to talk up 1st grade that night and tried to make him as excited as possible. I thought we were set!
Well the next morning I had to wake him up to get dressed (I never have to wake him up, he is usually awake at the crack of dawn so I should have known this was a sign). Well I was changing Peiton's diaper and he comes in the room just bawling, saying "I don't want to go to school, I am so scared. I don't want to go!" What do you say to your child that is so nervous and scared and you know you have to send him to school? Well I said what I think most parents would (I hope I am not the only one) I said..."Coop it is going to be okay, you will have a great time and when you get home if you can stop crying and be brave, I will take you to Target for a prize." I believe bribery is a great thing at times. Inside my heart was broken, I didn't want to send him to school I just wanted to protect him and take all of his fears away. Well, he calmed down eventually and we were on our way to school soon after. As we walked to school I could just see him holding the tears back. He had the look where his eyes were swelling up and your heart just hurts so bad because the tears just want to come out and your trying so hard to hold them in. I felt awful.
We found his classroom line outside the door and he just stood there nervous, but he was so brave. He did so great, there were no more tears, he stood there quietly not saying a word. I was so proud. He did a lot better than me. My poor cousin Kiley was there to comfort me and I sat there in tears when he wasn't looking. (Thanks Kiley for dealing with the crazy mamma!) I just get so nervous for him, I was the exact same way, but I was even more shy...didn't say a word, I know, hard to believe. After a long day of watching the clock every hour, I met up with him right outside the school and it looked like he did great. He said "it was a little fun." So that is better than not fun at all. And today he did great, a much better day!
It is so weird having my little guy gone all day long, I miss the kid. I am so proud of him and I am so blessed to have such a great little guy. And Bode and Peiton are so lucky to have such a good big brother. Love ya Coop!

Oh my goodness!! That is so sad. I almost cried reading it. I remember my cute Keiton was the same way. He bawled the first day of first grade. He was so scared. Ali was so excited. I hope that them being in the same class will help out. She sure loves her buddy Coop!! They are Best Friends, according to Ali (haha)
Well you are a great mom and should be so proud!
That made me so sad to read!! I'm so proud of him for being brave (and for you too, mom, I would want call him in sick and tell them, it's ok, let's just go play today instead!)
They still seem so little to be gone all day like that. I hope he likes it more and more!
Bless his little heart! I am sure that was so hard for you to have him go. What a darling kid! Your family is beautiful. I loved having you guys over. I am so glad we finally got together!
Ohhh! That boy is something special, I tell ya. (You're right, he and Carsen are A LOT a like....I have a feeling I will be posting a very similar post on my blog when Carsen starts 1st grade).
As a mother, I would've been in tears myself. You hate to see your child nervous and scared about something.
I love that you promised him a prize!!! (Sounds like me!)
Good job Coop! You rock.
You are scaring me to death! I am so glad it turned out alright. I will be such a mess. Cute post!
Oh sweet Coop. I'm glad it was a "little fun". Makes me nervous for Connor next month. I'd better start now getting him excited. :) We missed you in NY. Can't wait to go back with you guys.
That is such a sad story! I'm sure that it is so crazy to have him gone all day. He sounds like he is adorable. Bryns starts in two weeks I can't believe it. It seems like first grade will be harder than kindergarten. That was so cute that he was so brave when he got to school.
I was just like Cooper. My 1st grade experience was rough. I think I cried every Monday morning because I didn't want to go back. So that's great that he is liking it more each day. :) He sure is cute!
Poor little guy. I know exactly how you were feeling, just breaks your heart when your kids are upset. Im glad his first day went well. He will love it eventually. Love the layouts!
:( I guess he and Hannah aren't in the same class?
Wow- he does sound really brave. Poor sweetie. Good thing he has a great mom (who can actually empathize) to get him through it!
I love cooper, he really is the sweetest little guy! Good job to both of you, I am dreading that day too when my kids all start school.
Oh...and I think bribery's great, sometimes it's the only thing I can do (bad I know.)
This might sound silly, but I will always remember Cooper for being the proudest older brother I'd ever seen. I just remember when Bode was born He couldn't have been happier and more proud. I love that kid!!!
Oh he really is your kid isn't he? Just a male version of Natalie. You've got a good kid and we only hope that Drew will be something like Cooper. I'm glad he was tuff and stuck it out. Good for you for braving it too Nat.
I'm getting a little choked up just reading about this. I probably would have started crying if Colby was saying the same thing and told him he never had to go to school! :) Good thing you're a better mom than me!
That is so sad! I am glad things are getting better though. I am dreading next year when Kyra starts kindergarten.
